Under the Overpass

I have never
walked
this before; the first day
of light and

the railroad tracks
smell sharply of creosote and
iron
and I, I
feel built for this,
buzzing

with heat
tall grasses catching
between my toes -
I make contact with the ground,
drowning in foxglove and indian paintbrush,
daisies with ants clinging, violets
buttercup lupine

the sky feels like paper even
as the greenish
river water
insists
on making it's pummeling ascent

I imagine bodies caught in the
weeds just out
of sight but will is
sometimes stronger
than imagination

and I force movement
into my limbs
and walk on,
breathing in a summer
afternoon.
